   I think a good start in welcoming readers is an explanation of how I adopted the habit of playing with words to capture the content of life. Much of my analytical time is spent evaluating the experiences that shaped my attitudes. Trade school prepared me for a mechanic’s career, but wartime military service modified my perspectives and made me curious about what other roles I might play in the future, so I attended college on the GI Bill.  Courses in the humanities exposed me to stimulating themes that focused on the battle against spiritual desolation in American life. I discovered writing was a medium though which I could critically examine both sources of joy and desperate conditions that left so many crawling on the bottoms of despair. The creation of fictional characters provided a glimpse into what moved the human heart to deep states of personal anguish or initiated its reach for achievement and the high elevations of civil and kind behavior. One of my favorite avenues for exploring such contrary outcomes is the short story.
